LAUAN503 - Weekly 12

Tale Telling - Final Outcome

Here is the final outcome of the Stop Motion part with animatics and partially animated 2D section.

As I am writing this post, I will be already submitting late. Though, I thought I might as well edit the video to highlight the 'correct' credits for each part.

  • The first scene I animated was a part of the scene when Zhama had to leave and I finished off the scene with his directions.
  • The second scene I have been animating is the front view. While I was animating the puppet, Zhama was taking shots and assisting with directions as it was hard to see the Mac screen and play back from the angle where I stood.
Inserting the tongue with tweezers

Set up of the close up scene. Little pile of plasticine used to raise the sandwich in the scene.
  • The close up where the puppet licks its mouth, I used the rule of easing for this one made a few licks myself to figure out the timing. I used tweezers to insert and adjust the tongue, yet it was tricky since plasticine was scratched or squished during this process so it took several tries to get it right. At this point the puppet's arms were too weak so I supported the sandwich with a box and bits of plasticine.
Saliva attached to the chest of the puppet (did not show in the camera) to create effect of saliva dripping out of the puppet's mouth.
  • The scene with the saliva coming out of the puppet's mouth was achieved with tiny bits of cling film. Inspired by the use of cling film in Isle of Dogs feature animation. I had to use tweezers and be very precise, checking back on the screen how the lighting shows on the cling film to make it look consistent. As the cling film would reflect light or appear overexposed in certain position. It also had to be kept fluffy to create the right effect.
  • Next, I assisted Zhama with the falling sausage. The sausage is made out of plasticine painted with acrylic paint. So I pinned it onto a piece of wire and it took us several takes to get it into the right position to show the fall of the sausage. My hand was a bit shaky and I will not lie, this scene was complex. But Zhama did very well editing out the wire. :)
  • The close up fall of the sausage was done by me. I tried very hard to do it so that there would be no need for editing out the wire as we are very short on time at this point. But because I was taking photo at the same time as holding the sausage, the first shots are quite blurry. Lucky coincidence as it seems to work very well.
  • The next Zhama was doing a scene where he wanted the puppet's tongue showing. Since I already had the experience from previous 2 scenes he asked me to do it. So I have animated tongue on this medium shot under his direction.
  • At this stage we knew there will be no need for more shots of the floor and since I was so pleased with the close up sausage setting we decided to start first blood splats on the close up sausage. I would say it was a 50/50 scene as we both tried imitating the blood and decided where it is gonna go next etc. Afterwards, Zhama finished off the scene of the puppet charging at the camera and blood splats on the walls.
  • Lastly we took some stills. Zhama had an idea of what positions he wanted for the closing sequence so we set it up. I did mostly the camera angles and the lights. Then I realised that more tension can be added if the still has something to reveal so I covered half of the screen with my palm and then took a shot without my pal as well. It worked well and we were both happy with the result.
One of the difficulty I would say we came across was the consistency with the movement of the puppet's ears.

I would just like to add that we have been assisting each other with opinions on scenes, pressing the camera buttons, etc. when possible, with those little tasks which could give us a hard time otherwise while trying to animate.

And while I have been the main files organiser, lights and camera adjuster, Zhama was giving great directions on the puppet movement and approving the camera angles etc..

LAUAN503 - Talk This Way

Lip Sync
I found this task challenging as I did struggle to identify some words in the recordings. Hearing 'Polish horror movie' instead of 'Pauly Shore movie' in recording 11 for example, what did not make any sense in the context.
Notes
Secondly, our group project does not contain lip sync to a monologue/dialogue. Therefore I kept pushing this task in front of me until now, the week of the hand in. Thanks to one of the course-mates, I could access the recorded file of the lecture for this task. Together with the YouTube video below by Kyle Bergersen I managed to figure out how to use the remapping in After Effects. Although, it was not without tears, I can tell that I have learnt how to use a tool which will be useful in my future projects.

I made a decision to do the mouth on a character, mainly as I wanted to have it a little more cheerful. When I did not know the task would be actually quite enjoyable once I nailed the technique...

My final Lip-sync to recording no. 11:
